Ortho Evra birth control patch litigation
The Ortho Evra birth control patch (known more familiarly as "the Patch") was introduced on the market in 2002 by Ortho McNeil Pharmaceutical Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson, as an alternative to the birth control pill. The Patch was marketed as being just as safe and effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy as traditional combination oral contraceptives, with the added benefit of being more convenient because it need be applied weekly rather than taken daily.
Although several women in 2004 were believed to have died or suffered strokes as a result of using the Patch, the first death known to be associated with using Ortho Evra did not occur until 2005. Ortho McNeil and Johnson & Johnson have now revealed that women using the Patch are receiving on average 60% more estrogen than originally disclosed, which increases the risk of experiencing blood clots and possibly death. Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, P.C., currently represents more than 100 women who have suffered a heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism as a result of using the Ortho Evra patch.
