Child Protective Services (CPS) investigates all reports of child abuse and neglect to ensure the safety of children and uphold child laws. When a report of suspected child abuse, child neglect, exploitation or abandonment is received by the department of social services, CPS conducts an investigation which can include talking with the child and arranging for a medical or psychological examination. Although the primary goal of CPS is to protect the safety of children, the objective is also to keep children safely within their own families. If CPS believes a child is in danger, the agency can arrange for the child to be temporarily removed from the home, with the intent to work with the family so that the child can be returned, safely, as soon as possible.
