American original:
"These days with the gap between the haves and the have nots ever widening and the American dream becoming nothing short of a nightmare, it's inspiring to hear the story of Jayne Kelly.... Thirty years ago, Jayne was living the stark reality all too many American women face. She was left on the losing end of a failed marriage with four young children to support and nothing but a monthly welfare check to sustain them. But Jayne had something in her favor, something a lot of women in similar situations don't. A devoted Harley rider since the age of 16, she knew the meaning of independence and the feeling of freedom. She picked up her kids and possessions (including the Harley, of course) and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she got a job as a receptionist for a female criminal defense lawyer. Inspired by the success of her employer, she found the will to enroll in college. Jayne managed to earn a bachelor's degree in political science from UC Berkeley, and then go on the University of San Francisco where she earned her law degree.... Now [she] is one of the most successful and prominent family law attorneys in the city." (Easyriders Magazine)
"Her approach fuses negotiating the legal maze with providing creative moral support. Where children are involved, this means constant awareness that they are people, not property. One client, envious of her daughter's emotional closeness to the client's soon-to-be-ex-husband, deliberately sent the child to him without luggage one summer. She planned to blame the other parent for the disappearance of a suitcase full of clothes and a sleeping bag for camp. Fearing a contempt citation for her client and embarrassment for the child, Kelly quickly purchased a new suitcase, filled it with appropriate clothing, and laundered one of her family's sleeping bags; she then called opposing counsel to make sure the items got through." Zen and the Art of Property Distribution:
In one contentious case, Jayne and opposing counsel found a creative way to break an impasse over an item of community property: "We told [the judge] that we wanted to race for the piano because it was judicially expedient. It would save our respective clients a lot of money if they settled the case now, rather than have to return the following Monday. It would also be a hell of a lot more fun than further arguing. It was put on the court record. The party whose lawyer came in first would receive the piano at no cost. Winner take all. All agreed. The case would finally be over. The judge said that there was no way he was going to miss this show ... so the entire courtroom emptied out to watch the match. We all trooped out to the parking lot. We decided to race [our motorcycles] from one stop sign to another and back again (about two city blocks long). Fortunately for all of us, there is no traffic in front of the courthouse at that time of day. Dramatically, we revved our engines. The starting flag was a dropping of the files.... I made it halfway back before the other lawyer reached the first stop sign. It was an easy win. My client was overjoyed. I got a big hug from him. The other lawyer and I gave each other high fives and the judge cracked his first smile of the day." (Thunder Press)
