Most states have a consumer protection agency. This administrative body may be a part of the state attorney general’s office. In most cases states maintain a hotline that people can call to report fraud or other suspect conduct. In addition, the federal government has a consumer protection agency. This is operated by the federal Trade Commission. Both the state and federal authorities can investigate people and businesses that are the subject of complaints. In many cases the agencies can impose fines, order people to cease and desist and even bring lawsuits on behalf of injured people.
