What Is A Mass Tort
Full Video Transcript
A mass tort is a civil action or wrong that injures many victims and involves large numbers of claims against one or several defendants. You can think of it as a tort that affects a mass number of people. Mass tort cases have to be handled in a certain manner, because courts don’t like to litigate thousands of cases with similar facts one at a time. Therefore, they are consolidated, not into what people think of as a class action, rather all of the claims to be heard in a particular jurisdiction will be joined together. The laws about mass torts vary, and many regions have programs in place to administer and manage mass torts. In a mass tort, hundreds or thousands of plaintiffs with cases of a similar nature may be involved.
