Landlord/Tenant Law

What About Political Signs?

A landlord may be able to force you to remove a political sign from your window. The First Amendment to the Constitution provides that the government may not abridge any citizen`s right to freedom of speech, and that means political expression of any kind. But the amendment does not cover private relations, such as between a landlord and tenant. It is common for a lease to contain a clause that forbids the tenant to exhibit any sign, political or otherwise, in the window or elsewhere in the apartment without the approval of the landlord.
