Attorney James Tawney
James Tawney is a native of the Southwest dedicated to serving his community. He was born and raised in Arizona, where he attended Northern Arizona University and graduated summa cum laude. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he attended Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock, Texas. During this time, he received multiple awards for academic excellence and was actively involved in the trial advocacy program. He served as the lead articles editor on the Estate Planning & Community Property Law Journal, in which he was also a published author. He graduated from law school magna cum laude. After law school, James began his professional legal career at an El Paso based plaintiff’s personal injury law firm. His practice included representing multiple injury victims and their families throughout New Mexico and Texas. In 2016, he, along with fellow plaintiff’s attorney Alejandro Acosta, founded Tawney, Acosta & Chaparro P.C. with offices located in Las Cruces and Carlsbad, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. James lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In 2016-2017, James was awarded the designation of a Texas Rising Star by Super Lawyers magazine, which is produced by Thomson Reuters. He was also selected to the State Bar of Texas 2014 LeadershipSBOT Class and is a Board Member of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers. He has served on the Texas Trial Lawyers Association Board of Directors (2014-2015) as well as the State Bar of Texas Committee for Pattern Jury Charges: Malpractice, Premises, and Products (2014-15). He is a member of both the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.
Attorney Alejandro Acosta
Alejandro Acosta is a partner at Tawney, Acosta & Chaparro P.C., focusing on personal injury and employment law. Mr. Acosta is an accomplished trial and appellate lawyer. The cases he handles typically include on the job injuries, premises liability, auto collisions, dram shop liability, products liability, nursing home negligence, medical malpractice, trucking cases and wrongful deaths. Mr. Acosta handles each case from start to finish. His involvement in the cases includes pre-litigation, trial and appellate work. Mr. Acosta is a lifelong resident of El Paso. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 2000 and graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 2004. Mr. Acosta went on to attend Sandra Day O’ Connor College of Law (Arizona State Law School). He graduated in 2008, receiving his J.D. and his Indian Legal Certificate for his work in Indian Law and dealings with various tribal nations throughout Arizona. He was admitted and licensed to practice law in the State of Texas in 2008 and in the State of New Mexico in 2011. Mr. Acosta is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court, District of New Mexico and Western District of Texas.
Mr. Acosta began his legal career as a research attorney at the Court of Appeals for the Honorable Chief Justice Ann McClure. He spent two years at the Court of Appeals before becoming an associate at a personal injury law firm In 2016, Mr. Acosta opened up his own law firm in Texas and New Mexico to better serve the personal injury and employment needs of those communities.
Some of Mr. Acosta’s prior successes include an appearance in the June 2013 edition of Verdict Search in Texas for his role in obtaining a successful verdict for the plaintiff in a premises' liability claim. Also in 2013, he was published in the State Bar Litigation Section Report: “The Advocate” on Arbitration. Mr. Acosta has written and argued numerous appellate matters to the Court of Appeals. He has tried, to verdict, a wide variety of personal injury lawsuits. In 2014, he tried a wrongful death trucking case in El Paso County that resulted in a seven figure verdict for the plaintiffs.
Above all, Mr. Acosta prides himself on representing individuals that are unable to advocate or represent themselves. His passion is to provide a voice to those, who due to financial or language barriers, are unable to pursue their claims. Mr. Acosta is hopeful and excited that he and his partners will be able to help as many of those individuals as possible in both Texas and New Mexico.
Attorney Daisy Chaparro
Daisy Chaparro was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 2008 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy from St. Mary’s University in 2012. During the summers of 2010, 2011, and 2012 Ms. Chaparro was a legal intern for Lerma Law in El Paso, Texas. Ms. Chaparro then obtained her Juris Doctorate (magna cum laude) from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2015. She was admitted and licensed to practice law in the State of Texas in November 2015 and in the State of New Mexico in April 2016. While in law school, Ms. Chaparro developed a passion for oral and written advocacy. She represented Texas Tech Law as both an oralist and a brief writer in five national advocacy teams. She earned the Top Grade Award in her Trial Advocacy and in her Appellate Advocacy class. At the completion of her law school career, Ms. Chaparro earned the highest national advocacy distinction for law students when she was inducted into the National Order of Barristers. Throughout her time at Texas Tech Law, Ms. Chaparro served as the President of the Hispanic Law Student Association, on the Dean’s Student Ambassador Corp. as both an Ambassador and as a member of the Board of Directors, as a Student Attorney for the Civil Practice Clinic, and as an active member of the Board of Barristers.
During the summers of 2013 and 2014, Ms. Chaparro worked at the law firm of a personal injury law firm as a law clerk. Following law school, she began her career at a personal injury law firm as an Associate Attorney handling personal injury cases including auto collisions and work place injury cases. Ms. Chaparro is a member of the Texas Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the El Paso Bar Association, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and the American Association for Justice. She joins Tawney, Acosta & Chaparro P.C. as a litigating and briefing attorney for both personal injury and employment discrimination cases.
