A patent is commonly known as ownership of your invention. Legally, it’s a property right in that invention, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The patent grant excludes others from making, using, or selling the invention in the United States. Patent protection lasts for a number of years, up to 20 years, depending on the patent. However, it may take several years from the filing of an application to even obtain the patent in the first place. Once you have a protective patent, you may license it to others to use for a fee. There are numerous ways in which you can leverage a useful invention. For more information about whether you can obtain a patent, contact an attorney today.
