Are You Entitled to Work Breaks?
Full Video Transcript
Everyone needs breaks during the workday, but are you entitled to take any, and does your boss have to pay you for them? Whether you get a lunch break or a quick 10-minute pause can depend a lot on where you work. Federal law does not require breaks. However, many states have their own rules. For instance, California requires a 30-minute meal break if you work over five hours. But what about getting paid during these breaks? Generally, shorter breaks, usually about five to 20 minutes, should be paid. Lunch breaks or longer meal times? Those are usually unpaid unless your employer decides otherwise. So, even if you’re not paid, you might still be legally entitled to that breather to recharge. For more details on work breaks and what to do if your boss is treating you unfairly, visit LawInfo.com.
