In general, OSHA standards require that employers maintain safe and healthy job conditions to protect workers from the unreasonable risks of injury or other hazards. While OSHA standards apply to a wide variety of hazards, common examples include toxic substances, electrical hazards, fall hazards, hazardous wastes, fire and explosive hazards, dangerous machines, confined spaces, and infectious diseases. OSHA requires that certain records be kept regarding safety conditions and that reports be made when certain injuries occur. OSHA rules also protect whistleblowers from being discriminated against by virtue of reporting unsafe conditions at the workplace.
