Biomet Hip Replacement

Full Video Transcript

The Biomet M2A-Magnum Hip is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. While typical hip implants consist of components made from metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum has three all-metal components. The primary problem with this type of implant seems to be in the way the metal components make contact with each other when they are in motion. Specifically, it is believed that the friction created by the cup and the femoral head causes tiny particles of metal to migrate into the surrounding tissue. These metal particles can cause pain, joint tissue damage, and in more serious cases, metal poisoning.
