The U.S. Constitution and the constitutions of the 50 states each guarantee to the people certain civil rights. Generally, these are related to either discriminatory conduct by a person, business or the government, or to criminal procedure. The constitution specifically prohibits discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, age and gender. Our civil rights also protect us in criminal matters. For instance, requiring Miranda Rights and protecting against unlawful government searches and seizures, and fair and speedy trials.
