Overview of the Pennsylvania Court System
For those with little experience in the Pennsylvania court system, it can be a little intimidating. It helps to understand that there are three levels of courts. Each level handles different types of cases or appeals.
The Pennsylvania courts of common pleas make up the first level and hear both civil and criminal cases. There are 60 districts of these courts.
On the second level are the appeals courts. Unlike many states that only have one, there are two courts that handle appeals in Pennsylvania: the Superior Court and the Commonwealth Court. The Commonwealth Court handles cases involving various state agencies. The Superior Court covers appeals from the courts of common pleas.
The highest court in the state is the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, which reviews decisions by the lower courts. It also covers administrative matters, such as attorney discipline.
