Overview of the Oklahoma Court System

Dealing with a legal issue in the state of Oklahoma can be stressful. But, understanding the court system can make the process less intimidating.

The first level of courts are the district courts. There are 77 district courts in the state. They handle both civil and criminal trials at the first stage of the legal process.

Above the district courts are appeals courts: the Court of Criminal Appeals, the Court of Civil Appeals, and the Supreme Court. Unlike many states, Oklahoma has two “courts of last resort,” meaning they make the final decision on the case. The Oklahoma Supreme Court makes the final decision in civil cases. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals decides all criminal cases. Judges are appointed to the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals by the governor.
