Crafting a defense involves the incisive legal knowledge and expertise of attorneys who are familiar with the judges and prosecutors associated with criminal cases and can formulate cogent arguments that result in reduced sentences or the dismissal of charges altogether. The Joslyn law Firm’s attorneys have handled thousands of criminal cases in federal, state, city, and mayors courts and routinely work toward and achieve such outcomes.
The firm’s managing lawyer, Brian Joslyn, has an impressive list of credentials. He has been heralded by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys as one of the ten best criminal defense lawyers in Ohio. Columbus CEO Magazine selected him as a top criminal lawyer in the region, and he also has been touted as a Top 3 criminal defense lawyer in Columbus, Ohio. In addition, the National Trial Lawyers Association nominated him as a Top 100 Trial Lawyer in the nation.
Exclusively focusing on criminal defense in Central Ohio (including Franklin, Pickaway, Madison, Delaware, Licking, Union and Fairfield Counties), with a proven track record of success, Brian and his team of exceptional legal minds strive to raise the bar on criminal representation by individually tailoring every defense to their clients’ needs and the facts of each case. Regardless of a given client’s background, profession, or status, the Joslyn Law Firm renders the highest level of service and attention.
A brief inquiry into the impetus behind the Joslyn Law Firm reveals Brian’s riveting story, shaped by personal suffering sustained at the hands of law enforcement.
While attending a block party on the Ohio State University Campus, Brian (then in his late teens) stood on a private lawn, holding a milk carton. The sudden arrival of law enforcement, disseminating tear gas, sent the students into a tailspin. A canister flew in Brian’s direction, toppling him to the ground and leaving him in a near-unconscious state. As people tried to flee from arrest, chaos erupted.
Then, in a barbaric display of rage, an officer approached and split Brian’s skull open with a Mag flashlight. He then proceeded to stomp on the top and back of his head and entire body. Brian’s pleas for mercy went unheeded, while the officer’s cruelty continued. Using four zip ties, the officer fastened the defenseless boy’s hands behind his back. He then picked Brian up from behind, led him into an alley, and repeatedly slammed his battered form into the ground, breaking his thumb and causing shards of glass to penetrate his forearm. Subsequently, Brian found himself in the back of a police van filled with mace.
Cruel and inhuman treatment also ensued at the hospital, where police interrogated Brian without administering his rights and despite his refusal to sign documents. Later, after Brian submitted to drug and alcohol tests, the police declined anesthetics for the purpose of stapling his wounds. Consequently, the procedure took place without any analgesics whatsoever.
During intake at the jail, officers ridiculed Brian, calling him “Zipper Head,” and in an effort to destroy evidence, had washed his blood-stained clothes. His blood-tarnished wallet and paper money, however, revealed the horrible truth.
Absurd, specious charges were leveled against Brian, of which he was later entirely acquitted: five counts of assault on an officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, rioting, and failure to leave the scene of an emergency.
So began Brian Joslyn’s odyssey into the legal field. After prevailing in a law suit against law enforcement, he was determined to utilize his damages award for the collective good and become a champion of the presumption of innocence. He attended Thomas Jefferson Law School in San Diego, California, where he learned the intricacies of black-letter law and, most especially, the human condition.
Although ample opportunities awaited him in California, Brian’s abiding love for Columbus and a genuine desire to serve his community beckoned him home. He returned, not with bitterness towards law enforcement, but rather, stoic resignation to what had occurred, coupled with the awareness that the conduct of one or a few is not representative of a multitude. Each case and every individual must be evaluated on the totality of the circumstances, and in seeking to serve the ends of justice, criminal defense attorneys—as all legal practitioners—must acknowledge that there are heartbeats behind the statistics.
In keeping with this philosophy, every practitioner at the Joslyn Law Firm (including support staff) has a passion not only for their craft, but for humanity. They take care to listen, inform, and advise their clients as though they were family.
At every step of the way, they also acknowledge that anyone who seeks their guidance is the ultimate architect of their defense.
