Full Video Transcript

A trademark can be a name, symbol, logo, or device that is used to differentiate your product or service from that of someone else. Even color, schemes, shapes and sounds can be trademarked. The key is that your trademark must represent your business and its products and not be too descriptive or generic. If it’s too descriptive, it doesn’t sufficiently distinguish a product so usually can’t be trademarked. Let’s use the example of coffee rich Colombian gourmet coffee might not be able to be trademarked if it simply describes the coffee. Many copies are described this way. Whereas the brand name Starbucks is distinctive. you know that it is a different coffee company than anybody else. Trademark protection for your brand can sometimes be trickier than you might think.
