Whether you simply want to change your name because you recently got married, divorced, other legal matter, or you just want to change your name for kicks, there are some important legal steps to take. First, all states require some kind of paperwork to be filed, often including a petition for the name change with the local court. There may or may not be a court hearing, depending on how name changes are processed in your state. They are usually granted unless it appears there is some fraudulent reason underlying the request.
