Foster Care

Full Video Transcript

Foster care is referred to as a system in which children are temporarily placed in a private home, group home, or an institution. Minors who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned may be removed from their parents' custody and be placed in a foster situation. The government or a social service agency typically is the organization in charge of placing children into foster care. Often children are placed in a private home with foster parents. Foster parents are required by law to provide a loving, caring, safe environment. They are trained for this work and certified by the state. Foster care is intended to be a short-term solution until a permanent placement can be made.
