Full Video Transcript
If you've recently been laid off, fired or have otherwise lost your job you're probably wondering whether or not you have any legal rights. First of all, if you had an employment contract you want to make sure that your job termination doesn't violate your rights under the contract. For instance, if you were fired without being given a reason and your contract states that you can only be terminated for cause, then your termination may have been unlawful. Next, find out whether you're entitled to any severance pay. The law doesn't require severance be paid to departing employees but your employer may offer it. Also, if you were covered by an employer-sponsored health plan you have certain rights to continuation of that coverage under HIPAA, though you will be responsible for the premiums. Finally, contact your state unemployment development department you may be entitled to unemployment compensation while you find another job.
