Depending on what state you live in, the crime of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated may be called either a DUI, for driving under the influence, or DWI for driving while intoxicated or driving while impaired. In those states that recognize DWIs, the punishment for a successful conviction can include a fine, a loss of driving privileges through a license suspension, and even jail time. Some states recognize both DUIs and DWIs. In many of these states, a DWI conviction is often much more serious and carries with it a heavier penalty than a DUI conviction. In other states, the term DWI may be reserved for driving while under the influence of alcohol, whereas a DUI may be reserved for driving while under the influence of illegal drugs. Finally, in some states, the crime of DUI is reserved for minors, whereas anyone can commit a DWI.
