Many states have passed DUI-related vehicle impoundment laws. Depending on the state law, it may be mandatory for your car to be impounded after a DUI or multiple DUIs, or it may be up to the discretion of the arresting officer. States have passed these laws in increased efforts to deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel as well as to protect the public from drunk driving-related injuries. If your car is impounded, it may be for a few days or longer, depending on what is allowed in your state. Certain exceptions to the vehicle impoundment laws may apply and you may be able to get an early release if you fall within those exceptions.
