We would all like to think that drugs that are approved by the FDA are safe and we won’t be harmed by them. The truth is FDA approval of a drug means that the benefits outweigh the risks of a drug upon its release to the general public. While clinical studies may involve thousands of individuals testing a drug, those numbers are small compared to the number of people taking the drug once it’s on the market. Therefore, situations exist where the FDA and drug manufacturer will not know of serious side effects until the drug has been put on the market and taken by a large number of people.
