As of May, 2011, Topamax is a medication produced by Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and prescribed to help prevent migraines. Some doctor’s have prescribed Topamax to help prevent other disorders such as alcohol dependence, or to help increase weight loss, prevent eating disorders or help with mood and anxiety disorders. On March 4, 2011, the FDA issued a warning to patients that stated those who took Topamax while pregnant have an increased risk of giving birth to children with birth defects, such as a cleft lip or cleft palate.
