Meningitis Outbreak of 2012

As of early November of 2012 there have been over 400 cases of fungal meningitis and 31 deaths all related to an outbreak connected to steroid injections. The steroid is a preservative-free version of methylprednilosone acetate, which was mainly used in epidural steroid treatments to relieve back pain. The steroid was manufactured by The New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. As many as 14,000 people may have been exposed to the tainted steroid, and the FDA has released a warning advising patients who believe they may have been exposed to seek immediately medical attention.
