Accidents With Uninsured Motorists
Full Video Transcript
States require motor vehicle drivers to have car insurance – however, a surprising percentage of drivers do not comply with that law and choose to drive without motor vehicle insurance. If you are seriously hurt in an accident with an uninsured motorist it can be difficult to recover damages from that person. Typically uninsured motorists do not have insurance because they do not have the money to buy it – that means they also don’t have the money to pay for your damages. Your own insurance company may be able to help you, however. Most insurance companies offer uninsured motorist coverage to people who buy motor vehicle insurance from them – some states even require you to have uninsured motorist coverage as part of your motor vehicle insurance policy. If your insurance company does not honor its contractual responsibility to pay your damages pursuant to your uninsured motorist coverage then you may have the right to sue the insurance company and recover damages in court. You should review your motor vehicle insurance policy annually to make sure that you have this important uninsured motorist coverage.
