Party-directed mediation is an approach that seeks to enable each party to influence the outcome and resolution their conflict. The intent behind this form of mediation is to empower the parties and provide them with the means through negotiation to resolve their dispute in a mutually agreeable manner. By coming up with a self-directed resolution, disputants can have a say in the outcome. Unlike traditional litigation, this type of mediation is especially useful when the parties may have continued interactions either as neighbors, coworkers, etc. Not only are party’s able to hone negotiation skills to help resolve the problem at hand, but by developing such talents, parties are able to effectively deal with any future conflict that may arise.
