How Do I Know If My Employer Is Covered By Workers' Compensation?
Generally, unless your employer has been approved to selfinsure by the Department of Labor and Industry, they must buy worker`s compensation insurance if they hire one or more employees on a full or part time basis in Vermont, or they hire employees outside the state but they work for you in Vermont. Some exceptions to this are the following:
- Farmers with less than $2,000 annual payroll.
- Elected Officials
- Unincorporated soleproprietors/partners
- Corporate Officers who have been approved to be excluded by the Workers`
- Compensation Division.
- Casual employment (e.g. youth mowing lawn or babysitting)
- Amateur sports groups (e.g. sponsor of local ball team)
- Family members of an unincorporated employer if you live within the employer`s home.
- Work in someone`s home (e.g. medical care for a family member within the home)
- Real estate broker or real estate sales person on commission
