If a complaint is filed against a doctor of medicine (M.D.), doctor of osteopathy or, physician assistant then the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners will first determine whether the complaint is within its jurisdiction. Assuming that the complaint is within the jurisdiction of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, the Board will investigate the allegations. This may take several months. Part of the investigation may include a formal hearing at which witnesses will be subpoenaed to testify. After the investigation, the Board will inform the complainant and the doctor or physician assistant of its findings. If the Board finds that the doctor or physician assistant violated a law or regulation than the Board can insist that the doctor or physician assistant come into compliance and issue sanctions against the guilty party.
