Can I Keep My Home If I File Bankruptcy in Washington D.C.?

Most Washington D.C. homeowners will keep their homes if they file for bankruptcy, their mortgages are current and they continue to make regular monthly mortgage payments. Washington D.C.’s homestead exemption is for the full amount of equity in the property. Therefore, unsecured creditors cannot be paid from the sale of the home.
