The federal government says that every State must have child support guidelines, and that the guidelines must get updated every few years. Experts believe that having mandatory guidelines gives children everywhere their fair share of support from both parents. This means that children who live with only one parent, or split time between two parents can live as well as children who share their homes with both of their parents in an intact family.
