US Green Card Lottery
Each year there is a US Green Card Lottery operated by the Department of State. 50,000 visas are issued annually based on the US Green Card Lottery, which is officially known as the Diversity Visa. The US Green Card Lottery is only open to those persons born in countries with low rates of immigration to the US. Those countries whose citizens are eligible for the US Green Card Lottery are subject to change by Congress. Each winner, and their family, will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency status after receiving their visa.
