Topamax
With over 32 million prescriptions filled between January 2007 and December 2010, the medication Topamax has been one of the most prescribed anti-epilepsy drugs. However, on March 4, 2011, the FDA issued a warning to pregnant and potentially pregnant women who took Topamax that their child may face higher than normal chances of having a child born with a defect.
Topamax Side Effects
Based on several different studies by NAAED, the UK Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register and Neurology medical journal, there appears to be a link between Topamax and an increased risk of birth defects. The increased rate of birth defects ranged from 21.3% higher chance of a cleft lip or palate to a 16-fold increase in overall birth defects when the mother took Topamax while pregnant.
