Real Estate Law is the law related to buying, selling, leasing, developing and managing real estate. The law of real estate varies from state to state, although a few areas of real estate law have federal implications. Real estate law touches on federal law in the areas of eminent domain and taxation, as well as environmental and land usage law. Each of these fields also have state and even local law counterparts. Lawyers with a real estate practice typically represent buyers and sellers of real estate, but may also represent the interests of developers and investors. In this way, many real estate lawyers also are skilled in business law. In some states, lawyers do not play a large role in the closing of a real estate transaction, as those duties are handled by escrow and title companies. Typically, lawyers do not represent both the buyer and seller in a real estate transaction, though the law of many states allows them to represent both parties with fully-inform consent.
