Attorney Carlos I. Uresti

Raised on San Antonio’s South Side with seven siblings, Senator Carlos Uresti graduated from McCollum High School, and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves at the age of 18 as a Private First Class. He rose to the rank of Captain and earned the Navy Achievement Medal during his four years of active duty as a combat engineer. Sen. Uresti earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Teaching Certificate from St. Mary’s University and graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1992. he is currently in private practice in San Antonio.

A 1997 special election to the Texas House of Representatives opened the door to state politics for Senator Uresti. He served in the House for nine years and was elected to the Senate in 2006. Senate District 19, reconfigured in last year’s redistricting session, covers some 35,000 square miles, including all or part of 17 counties. It is larger than 11 states and 124 nations, extends close to 400 miles of border region, and contains portions of the Eagle Ford Shale Development area.

Sen. Uresti is vice chairman of the Administration Committee and the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and serves on the Health and Human Services, Natural Resources, Jurisprudence and Redistricting committees. He was selected by his colleagues in 2010 to serve as chairman of the Senate Hispanic Caucus.

A champion of children, veterans and the elderly, Sen. Uresti has authored, co-authored and sponsored numerous bills on their behalf,  including landmark reforms of the Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services; an expansion of the state’s newborn screening program, a property tax exemption for disabled veterans, and a Silver Alert system for missing elderly persons.  In 2011, Sen. Uresti passed legislation giving voters a choice to dissolve the troubled BexarMet utility.  Sen. Uresti brought stability to the oil and gas appraisal process, to the benefit of counties and school districts, and passed legislation for the Port of San Antonio that has already resulted in job creation through large employers, such as Boeing.

Sen. Uresti is the founding chairman of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, a coalition of community activists, leaders and volunteers dedicated to the idea that every child should get a fair chance at life — free of physical and mental abuse, hunger and neglect. In the 2009 Legislature, Sen. Uresti created a statewide Blue Ribbon Task Force to study new approaches for the treatment and prevention of child abuse.

Sen. Uresti sits on the Board of Trustees for Communities-In-Schools of San Antonio, the nation’s largest community-based dropout prevention organization, and is a lifetime member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Manuel Alvarado Post 9186, Sen. Uresti formed the Bexar County Veterans’ Coalition in 2006 and is a member of the United States Marine Corps League, the American Legion, and the Alamo Silver Wings Airborne Association.
