Jory L. Trease, Esq.

Jory L. Trease is an Attorney with Jory L. Trease, ESQ., Inc. His practice is almost exclusively devoted to bankruptcy representation within the State of Utah, primarily assisting Debtors in bankruptcy, in all phases and Chapters of the United States Bankruptcy Code.

Mr. Trease graduated from the University of Utah in 1983 with a B.S. in psychology, and a minor in Family and Consumer Studies. He received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1986 from Pepperdine University School of Law, Malibu, California.
Mr. Trease is an active member of the Utah State Bar Association, authorized to practice in all Courts, State and Federal, within the State of Utah; as well as being admitted to practice before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

His practice focuses on Petitions under Chapter 7 and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code, Adversary Proceedings (including all phases of litigation), and associated Appellate work before the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, and the 10th Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel. Mr. Trease has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the Utah Bankruptcy Lawyers Forum since 2000, and held the position of President for the organization between 2003 and 2006.

Mr. Trease is legally recognized as “The Bankruptcy Attorney” in the State of Utah; and his reputation, knowledge, and experience, sustain such a moniker. It is not unusual for other Bankruptcy practitioners within the State of Utah to seek the advice of Mr. Trease regarding their respective cases; and he regularly confers with such attorneys to assure quality representation is provided to all who seek protection under th U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the District of Utah. No other legal professional within the District of Utah is considered to have greater qualification to represent Debtors in Bankruptcy than Mr. Trease; and he takes this distinction very seriously.

Mr. Trease strives to guarantee that the rights of consumers in general are protected under the provisions of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and other federally mandated consumer legislation. To assist in this regard, he has eagerly devoted his time and efforts to the Debtor’s Counseling Clinic which is a program sponsored by the Utah State Bar Association, Utah Legal Services, and the Pro Bono Initiative of the S.J. Quinney College of Law. In addition to contributing his time in counseling members of the public who attend the clinic, he has been instrumental in providing the training to the law students and others who govern the program.

Additionally, Mr. Trease also represents individuals and business entities under the more complex provisions of Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code; and has experience in representing some of the few farmers and ranchers in the District of Utah that have sought protection under the Chapter 12 “Family Farmer” portions of the Bankruptcy Code.

Mr. Trease is a frequent lecturer and presenter to various groups and organizations regarding the practice of Bankruptcy law in the State of Utah. In the recent past, he has participated in presentations at Utah State Bar Association conferences, religious congregations, and various other gatherings by legal foundations and consumer oriented organizations.

During the hours beyond Mr. Trease’s customary 50 hour work weeks, he enjoys eating; sleeping; spending time with his wife, son, and their Labradoodle; scuba diving; and, traveling in general.

Janci M. Lawes is an Attorney with Jory L. Trease, ESQ., Inc. Her practice is almost exclusively devoted to bankruptcy representation within the State of Utah. She has previously been employed by the Chapter 13 Trustee in the District of Utah as a staff attorney.
