Domestic Violence

Houston Texas criminal defense lawyer Colin Amann zealously defends his clients accused of domestic violence.  He provides the legal guidance, protection, and resources necessary to navigate these treacherous waters.  Colin is a dedicated domestic-violence attorney experienced in all legal matters pertaining to:

  • Domestic Violence
  • Restraining Orders
  • Orders of Protection
  • Child Abuse
  • Spousal Abuse

Under Texas law, a person commits domestic assault if he “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury” to a family member or household member.  Domestic violence can include physical assault, such as hitting; pushing and shoving; sexual abuse; unwanted or forced sexual activity; and stalking. Even a mere threat can qualify as domestic assault if it places someone in fear of imminent bodily injury.  So “emotional” violence is covered by the law, as well.

Domestic violence can occur between people who may or may not be married; heterosexual, gay, or lesbian; living together; separated; or merely in a dating relationship. The law therefore impacts virtually any adult interaction.

Domestic assault accusations are on the rise and will likely lead to an arrest and a criminal charge, so there is little doubt that such allegations can have a serious impact on your life. Penalties for offenders are increasing, warrants are not needed to arrest someone, and the victim’s agreement is no longer necessary to file charges. It is, in fact, quite likely that the victim’s desire to drop the charges will not be honored by the District Attorney’s Office. In short, it’s dangerous to fight the system alone.
