What does a paralegal do?
A paralegal assists the attorney in all phases of legal work:
- Interviewing clients and witnesses
- Doing Legal Research and Other Investigative Work
- Drafting Legal Documents and Briefs
- Filing Documents and Retrieving Documents from the courthouse and other government agencies
- Preparing and Organizing Evidence For Trial
- Assisting the Attorney in the Courtroom
A paralegal can do almost anything an attorney can do, except give legal advice or represent a client in court. A person who wishes to hire a paralegal to draft legal documents for him, must represent
himself in court and present his own case before the judge. This is called being a “Pro Se Plaintiff” or a “Pro Se Defendant”, depending upon which side of the lawsuit you are on. Our office does not
advise clients to go to court without an attorney except in strictly uncontested matters. There must not be any remaining disputed issues between the parties, in order for everything to go smoothly in court
without problems.
