Verdicts & Settlements
Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council, 505 U.S. 1003 (1992). The United States Supreme Court held that the state regulation had deprived Lucas of all economically beneficial use of his land; ultimately the state had to pay Lucas $850,000 for this loss.
Layman v. State of South Carolina, 630 S.E.2d 265 (S.C. 2006). Class action on behalf of state retirees that resulted in return of over $35 million to the retirees.
Manning v. City of Columbia, 377 S.E.2d 335 (S.C. 1989). Inverse condemnation case brought after City’s levies broke and allowed river to flood Manning’s properties. Jury returned a verdict for $4,125,000.00, which was upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
SCDOT v. Kellogg Corporation, Civil Action No. 07-CP-02-492. Condemnation action in which landowner, represented by Lewis & Babcock, was awarded a verdict of $1,336, 518.00, which was unappealed.
