Although most parents are delighted and anxious to have a baby, the possible birth injuries that could occur have a weighing effect as well. Erbs Palsy, or brachial plexus palsy, is a weakness in the upper nerves of a child’s shoulder that causes a lack of motion in their arm, hand and fingers. In serious cases all five nerves are affected, causing the entire arm from the shoulder down to be paralyzed. One or two of every 1,000 babies are diagnosed with erbs palsy and experience the effects of such a birth injury caused by a difficult delivery.
Erbs palsy can occur if a baby’s neck is stretched during birth, during a breech presentation, or if a birth is prolonged. The condition is recoverable but must be carefully monitored and treated over time. An attorney can be helpful in obtaining the resources necessary in order to properly treat your child and assist in recovery. Many support agencies are also available to assist in further understanding the condition and help through the treatment process.
