Contract law involves the broad range of business and personal agreements between people and between people and companies. The legal issues in this field have to do with formation of agreements, performance of agreements and dispute resolution. As a general principle, contract law states that unless all parties to an agreement understand their rights, obligations, promises and duties, no legal agreement is formed. Therefore, formation is a vital legal issue at the beginning of business relationships. Performance involves whether each party did what the agreement specified, and if not, whether the agreement has been breached. When a breach occurs, the agreement may specify what a person can do to cure the breach. If this does not occur, dispute resolution usually takes place. This can range from mediation to arbitration to the filing of a civil case for damages.
