Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a temporary immigration status granted to eligible nationals of designated countries who are temporarily unable to safely return to their home country because of ongoing armed conflict, an environmental disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions.

A TPS can be given to a nation due to unsafe conditions that temporarily prevent their nationals from safely returning, such as a natural event like a hurricane or earthquake, or where the nation cannot adequately handle the return of its nationals.
