Supreme Court Lawyers

The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court in the country. The U.S. Supreme Court hears mostly appeals from other courts, but in a few narrowly defined areas the Supreme Court can hear cases that have not been previously heard by another court. In addition,  each state has a Supreme Court. Usually that is the highest court in the state and hears mostly appeals from lower state courts. However, in some states, such as New York, the Supreme Court is actually a number of courts in each judicial district and the highest court in the state is called the Court of Appeals. Many lawyers practice before these courts and sometimes this requires the lawyer to obtain a special certificate based on experience and excellence in order to represent clients before a supreme court.
