Financial institutions include banks, savings and loans, credit unions, commercial finance companies and other types of businesses engaged in financial affairs. Usually, we think of banks when we think of financial institutions and certainly banks are the largest and most common of these institutions. However, other institutions play major roles in the financial industry. Credit unions and savings and loans have many millions of members and account holders and provide many of the same financial services as banks. Consumer and commercial finance companies are institutions designed to provide credit, though typically do not retain deposits of money. All of these financial institutions assist in keeping money flowing through the economy and making credit available to people.
