Computer crime includes information theft, using a computer for unauthorized or illegal activities, committing fraud through computer usage such as in the case of identity theft, transmitting unlawful information through a computer, or using the Internet for such types of activity. Computer crime is investigated at the local, state, federal and international levels of government. Often, victims of computer crimes are unaware that a crime has been perpetrated using their computer. Also, in some cases the perpetrators of computer crime may be unaware that their conduct is illegal. Many lawyers practice in the area of computer law, defending or prosecuting cases or working for technology companies.
