When a child is born in the United States or one of its territories, typically his or her parents are American citizens either by birth or having obtained citizenship status through the naturalization process. As a result, the child automatically becomes an American citizen. However, this is often not the case for thousands of children and in order to be considered a U.S. citizen, the child must go through the citizenship process which Congress established under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) as amended by the Child Citizenship Act (CCA). Once the child has met these Acts requirements, then he or she has obtained status as citizenship through parents.
