Personal finance involves the entire scope of a person’s financial affairs. Personal finance intersects with law and lawyers in several potential ways. The most common areas where lawyers provide services related to personal finance are estate planning, family law, banking, consumer law and debtor-creditor law. Finance is a key component to estate planning and can be a very personal aspect involved in creating an estate plan. Personal issues related to finance also can become involved in divorce and custody issues that family lawyers handle. While the finance issues related to consumer law and debtor-creditor law are less personal than in some other practice areas, nonetheless personal finance is often at the core of the issue upon which the lawyer is providing representation.
