A skilled patent attorney can assist a person in successfully applying for a patent and in bringing a patent infringement lawsuit. A patent is generally issued to legally protect unique design, process or new product ideas. Inventors and innovators apply for patent protection in order to preserve their financial and other rights accruing from their work. An attorney can assist the inventor or innovator in the application process by helping to distinguish the design or process involved from other similar ideas that may already have patent protection. A patent attorney may also be able to bring patent infringement lawsuits, or defend their client against a patent infringement lawsuit brought by another party. An attorney who practices in this field is often called an intellectual property attorney.
