While many states and some federal agencies provide consumer protection services, this is also something that some lawyers provide. In some cases lawyers may provide assistance through pro bono work for agencies. In other cases, lawyers provide such assistance as a part of representing a client in a civil case alleging fraud by another party. In addition to lawyers, most states provide staff to assist people with problems dealing with persons or businesses that are engaging in deceptive practices. When matters are serious enough, such complaints may be transferred to the attorney general’s office. In this way, consumer protection services can be provided at no cost to citizens.
