The laws of most states provide for a number of consumer rights. These protections are focused around commercial transactions and forms of fraud or deceptive practices. In commercial transactions, protections involve the recognition that corporations have superior knowledge, resources and bargaining power. Therefore, as a matter of public policy, most states have laws to limit how businesses engage in commerce with people. With regard to deceptive practices, the laws cover both business activity as well as activity committed by individuals. Overall, consumer rights laws try to create a business climate of trust, fairness and positive business practices.
