The American With Disability Act was passed in 1990 and largely replaced the earlier Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Among the most compelling aspects of the American With Disability Act are the so-called “accommodations” provisions. These provisions require employers and owners of public buildings to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities by making physical changes to things like entryways and doorways. Since some of the required accommodations were known to be quite costly, the ADA provided for a tiered implementation from 1990 to the present day. This allowed businesses and others to make reasonable accommodations over time.
